In a thrilling and emotional match, the Israel National Rugby Team made history with a dramatic 16-15 victory over Malta\u2014its first-ever win over the Mediterranean side, who sit 23 places above Israel in the world rankings.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
A cool-headed penalty by Maayan Levinson in the final play of the game secured the victory at Malta\u2019s Tony Bezzina Stadium and placed Israel in a strong position to top the Rugby Europe Conference. Only one match remains, against Cyprus on 26 April 2025.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
Israel Takes Control Early<\/h4>\n\n
From the opening whistle, Israel came out focused and disciplined. Their aggressive defence shut down Maltese attacks and paved the way to a 6-0 halftime lead.<\/p>\n\n
Young fly-half Maayan Levinson, playing only his second test, managed the game with composure beyond his years. His second penalty\u2014a booming 50-metre kick\u2014showcased world-class skill and extended Israel\u2019s advantage before the break.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
A Sparkling Try and More Pressure<\/h4>\n\n
Israel kept their foot on the gas after halftime, dominating both possession and territory. In the 50th minute, a slick set-piece from the scrum saw Idan Eisenberg release Daniel Stein for a clean break and try under the posts. Levinson\u2019s conversion stretched the lead to 13-0.<\/p>
\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
A few minutes later, Yahel Rozillio nearly scored off a chargedown, as Israel continued to push the pace.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
Malta Fights Back<\/h4>\n\n
Malta refused to fold. They responded with two tries from rolling mauls and added a penalty, turning the score around to 15-13 in their favour with only minutes remaining.<\/p>
\nBut Israel didn\u2019t flinch. As the clock wound down, they forced a turnover deep in Maltese territory. In the final movement, Malta were penalised at the ruck, handing Levinson a chance to win it. He slotted the kick with ice in his veins.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
Player of the Match: Thomas Berman<\/h4>\n\n
Flanker Thomas Berman was a standout all game. He dominated the breakdown, made key steals and tackles, and helped Israel keep their composure during Malta\u2019s comeback. In just his second test match, Berman played with the intensity and experience of a veteran.<\/p>\n\n
Berman made a significant contribution to Israel’s control of the game, especially at critical moments when the Maltese pressure was at its peak stealing the ball continuously making his tackles and being first at the breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n

“We trained incredibly hard and had a clear plan to beat Malta. Five minutes into the second half we were up by 13, but credit to Malta\u2014they came back strong and exposed our lineout issues. Still, our players stuck to the plan and believed until the final whistle. This result is a huge moment for Israeli rugby.”<\/p>\n\n
The coach added: “We had said in the build up that no matter what we would stick to the game plan and play until the end – for each other and for the people back home that are supporting us and desperately needing some magic. With one minute to go we were behind and the ball was in the hands of Malta – it seemed lost until Nemani Buliruarua forced a Maltese player to leave his feet at the ruck and give us a last gasp opportunity to kick for goal and win… Maayan Levinson, who kicked four from four on the day, stepped up and put the ball through the middle of the poles… I am very proud indeed.”
