Eight years of commitment, five training sessions a week, and an excellence scholarship: this is how rugby became the centre of 14-year-old Yehonathan Yaron\u2019s life. \u201cMy dream is to play for Tel Aviv Heat,\u201d he says.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n

While most kids his age are focused on social identity, peer pressure, and online trends, Yehonathan already knows exactly who he is \u2014 a rugby player for the Hadera Tel Mond club (Hadarim), with burning passion for the game and nearly a decade of experience on the pitch.<\/p>\n\n

His dedication hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed: Yehonathan is set to receive an Excellence in Sport Scholarship from the Tel Mond Local Council in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to a growing sport in Israel.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI must\u2019ve been about six,\u201d Yehonathan recalls. \u201cMum and I were looking for after-school activities. We walked past a rugby field and she suggested football \u2014 I wasn\u2019t interested.\u201d His mother, Ofira, remembers that moment: \u201cAt a community fair, we saw two tall men in orange shirts passing a strange-looking ball. They invited Yehonathan to join in \u2014 he started running around and didn\u2019t want to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

What started as a spontaneous tryout quickly turned into a lifelong passion. \u201cAt first, it was the environment I loved,\u201d Yehonathan explains. \u201cOther sports felt more toxic. Rugby gave me the support I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Facing His Fears<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Yehonathan admits the contact aspect of rugby was intimidating at first. \u201cI used to get the ball, run, and stop before the tackle.\u201d Over time, though, fear gave way to confidence. \u201cNow I\u2019ve got the mass and the strength to go in. Confidence is everything. Rugby accepts all shapes and sizes \u2014 I never felt I had to look a certain way. Once I realised I\u2019d be playing forward, I started focusing more during training. I want to succeed on the pitch, and I know what it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Ofira says rugby has shaped her son in ways far beyond sport. \u201cHe learned not to be afraid, to be brave, and to push forward. What used to be challenges became strengths. His stubbornness turned into determination. He\u2019s bigger than most kids his age, and rugby made that an asset. Tackling, scrums, rucks \u2014 that\u2019s his bread and butter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cHadarim Is My Second Home\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Yehonathan credits his club and coaches for nurturing his development. \u201cHadarim has the best coaching around. It\u2019s like a second home. Our coaches drive us to give everything \u2014 not to get injured, but to give from the body and the heart. My coach, Shachar Reicher, once told me: \u2018Just get in there. Don\u2019t overthink. Trust your instincts and run.\u2019 That stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Ofira agrees. \u201cIt\u2019s a real family atmosphere. Coaches like Tomer, Lili, Thomas, and especially Shachar Reicher \u2014 who hosts end-of-season parties at his home \u2014 give their all. It\u2019s more than training; it\u2019s care, bonding, and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Dedication as a Way of Life<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Yehonathan isn\u2019t just showing up \u2014 he\u2019s pushing himself beyond expectations. \u201cI used to train twice a week. Now it\u2019s four or five times, including sessions with the senior team and at Wingate. I even do strength training at night.\u201d \nIt\u2019s demanding, Ofira admits. \u201cThree practices a week, late-night workouts, weekend tournaments \u2014 it doesn\u2019t leave much time for other things.\u201d But Yehonathan wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. \u201cI love seeing results. I pay attention to sleep, food, and everything beyond practice. That\u2019s how you grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Natural Leadership<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

In a recent match, when the team captain was injured, Yehonathan stepped up. \u201cI told the guys, \u2018Heads up \u2014 you\u2019re good,\u2019 and we finished strong.\u201d \n \n<\/p>\n\n

He plays for the joy of it, not just the score. \u201cOne parent once asked the result,\u201d says Coach Shachar Reicher. \u201cI realised I hadn\u2019t even checked \u2014 what mattered was that they had fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Yehonathan\u2019s upcoming scholarship is a proud moment \u2014 not just for his personal growth, but for the visibility it gives to rugby. \u201cThey\u2019re recognising commitment and effort in rugby,\u201d he says. \u201cThat means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

More Than Just a Sport<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Rugby\u2019s values resonate deeply with Yehonathan. \u201cWe respect each other more than in any other sport. Your opponent becomes your mate after the game. It\u2019s like having another family.\u201d \nOfira laughs, remembering how he used to describe smashing into rivals and then heading off for burgers with them. \u201cThe Union is doing something special \u2014 building a culture of family, respect, and fair play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

And Yehonathan\u2019s ambitions? \u201cI\u2019m giving it everything to reach the top \u2014 my dream is to play for Tel Aviv Heat. I\u2019ve seen their level. That\u2019s where I want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

For Ofira, her son already exemplifies everything worth celebrating: \u201cHe represents commitment, long-term perseverance, ambition, and a deep desire to develop rugby in Israel.\u201d \n \n<\/p>\n\n

In a world where teenagers often lose their way, Yehonathan Yaron has found his \u2014 with a not-so-round ball, on a muddy pitch, in a club that feels like home.<\/p>\n\n
